Aspirin, the acetyl ester of 2-hydroxybenzoic acid (salicylic acid) is one of the world's earliest synthetic drugs. It had been used in folk medicine. In 1763, Edward Stone reported that a portion derived from powdered willow bark (which contains salicylic acid) had analgesic properties. By 1859, the German chemical company Bayer was marketing salicylic acid in various medicines.
The real breakthrough came when Felix Hoffman at Bayer found a simple way of acetylating salicylic acid, and he administered the O-acetyl salicylic acid to ease his father's rheumatoid arthritis. The chairman of Bayer (Heinrich Dreser) coined the name 'aspirin' and the first prescription was given in 1899.
In my last organic chemistry experiment for this semester, I followed the work of Hoffman in acetylating crude salicylic acid. And this is my very first lab-synthesized drug on my way on becoming a pharmacist insyaAllah..

Winter Break
|
|
It's winter holiday and i couldnt wait to see aina and my friends in sheffield. I took a bus from cardiff to london on 21 dec at 6 am and met aina at the victoria coach station, london. We stayed in london with apeq and ecah at the queenmary university hall of residence for about 3 days before going to sheffield. In london, asma guided us to interesting spots and I managed to snap a few pics there: Buckhingham Palace (changing of guards), Tower of London, London Eye (xnaik pon, amik gambar je hehe), Big Ben, Westminster Abbey and Trafalgar Square. Then on the 23rd, we went to sheffield. I stay at kazman's and aina stays at Hajar's (aina's cousin). I didnt know that a group of kmbians were coming to visit sheffield as well. The day before I went back to london i got to hang out with aina n her cousin at meadow hall (shopping centre) and even watched a movie - The Incredibles. All I can say is that i had really enjoyed my winter holiday

It was 2 o'clock in the morning when shaq called me and told me it's snowing outside! hehe..dengan semangatnya kitorang (aku dan housemates) pon kuar and amik gambar..ahaha..kelakar la plak rasa..hahaha

Hehe setelah lebih sebulan and syawal pon telah berlalu barulah aku free nk meng"compile"kan gambar2 masa hari raya hari tu (dari 4 kamera yg berlainan)..tak banyak pon..yang banyak2 gambar kat bawah ni gambar masa kitorang buat masak2 and makan2 kat umah shaq (Ruthin Gardens) on 1st day raya..tak pakai baju melayu pon (takut kotor hehe)..gambar2 lain yg pakai baju melayu tu ialah gambar2 masa makan kat umah abang post-grad (Penarth) and jamuan dak2 post-grad kat Channel View (nama tempat ni bukan nama channel hehe)..sory rasanya gambar2 kat atas ni tak macam hari raya pon hehe..banyak gambar cam tengah merepek je..tapi masa kitorang buat makan2 kat umah shaq tu ada iringan lagu raya..so masa tu ada la feel raya sket..dalam fotopages ni suasana tu takleh nk hidupkan balik lak..hehe

Hari ni member aku Aidil yg belajar kat Bristol datang melawat kitorang kat Cardiff ni..Aidil ni satu dorm ngn aku dari form 1 sampai form 5 masa kat Saina dulu..dia tido kat umah rahisham..hari ni kitorang kuar amik gambar kat cardiff castle (tak masuk pon..dari luar je), bute park, and luar millenium stadium..pastu the next day diorang datang umah aku pagi2 amik gambar kat bilik aku lak..dahle aku baru bangun tido n tak mandi lagi..so mmg serabai sket aa..muahaha
